The story behind Bhooter Raja (King of Ghosts) and his Bor (Boons) stems from the iconic 1969 Bengali fantasy musical film Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne, directed by Satyajit Ray, which was based on a children’s story by his grandfather, Upendrakishore Raychowdhury. Goopy (a singer) and Bagha (a drummer) are banished from their respective villages because they are terrible musicians, making noise rather than music. They meet in a forest, where they bond over their shared misfortune. While attempting to scare away a roaming tiger, they play their music simultaneously. The chaotic sound attracts a group of ghosts. The King of Ghosts (Bhooter Raja) appears. Impressed by their audacity and strange music, he grants them three boons:
-
- Unlimited Food: They can get any food they want just by clapping their hands.
- Magical Slippers: A pair of slippers that can transport them anywhere instantly.
- Musical Mastery: They gain the ability to hold people in awe with their music (rendering them motionless).
- The Condition: These boons only work when they are together.
Barfi is an evil, mute magician and scientist character in Satyajit Ray’s 1969 fantasy film Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne, played by Harindranath Chattopadhyay. He serves the King of Halla, plotting to attack Shundi by creating a drug that removes the citizens’ muteness.
