Associated with the Purulia Chhau dance, these masks are central to storytelling, often depicting characters from the Ramayana and Mahabharata. Layers of paper pulp and glue are applied to clay molds, sun-dried, and painted. They are then adorned with beads, tinsel (zari), and feathers. Masks represent a wide range of characters including Goddess Durga, Shiva, Ravana, demons, and various animals. They typically have dramatic expressions with wide, bloodshot eyes, and open mouths. The masks are a crucial part of the cultural heritage of Purulia, with the craft primarily thriving in the village of Charida.
