Devi Notebook (Small)

Devi (1960) is a seminal Bengali film directed by Satyajit Ray based on a short story by Prabhat Kumar Mukhopadhyay. It explores themes of religious dogmatism, superstition, and patriarchy in 19th-century rural Bengal through the story of a young wife (Sharmila Tagore) believed to be an incarnation of Goddess Kali by her father-in-law (Chhabi Biswas). It won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Bengali and was nominated for the Palme d’Or at the 1962 Cannes Film.
