Kolkata’s minibus system emerged as a crucial, privately operated, smaller capacity transit network, flourishing from the 1970s onwards to navigate the city’s narrow streets and complement larger buses. Known for distinct yellow and blue, or yellow and green, paint, they initially served suburban routes before expanding city-wide. By 2025, they face phase-out due to unviability, with only a fraction of the 1,900-strong fleet remaining.
