Bangal Ghoti (Fridge Magnet)

“Ghoti” and “Bangal” are traditional socio-cultural sub-groups among Bengalis, referring to people from West Bengal (Ghotis) and East Bengal (now Bangladesh, the Bangals) respectively, with historical distinctions in food, dialect (Rarhi vs. Eastern Bengali), customs, and rituals, often highlighted through friendly rivalry, like in football, and linked to geographical origins and the Partition of India. Bangals traditionally ate fish cooked with roots and vegetables (like shutki), while Ghotis favored different preparations. Subtle variations in marriage, funeral rituals, and daily practices exist.  A strong “us vs. them” dynamic, famously seen in the Kolkata derby football matches (Mohun Bagan for Ghotis, East Bengal for Bangals).
