Double-decker buses were introduced in Kolkata in 1926 by Walford & Company, becoming a iconic symbol of the city’s transport heritage. Initially connecting Shyambazar to Kalighat, these buses were immensely popular for their upper-deck views before being phased out around 2005 due to high maintenance and logistical challenges. Modern, open-roof versions were reintroduced in 2020 for tourism. Iconic Route: The Shyambazar–Kalighat route was one of the earliest and most famous, acting as a crucial transport link. “London” to Calcutta: Interestingly, in the 1950s, a specialized double-decker bus service operated between London and Calcutta. Modern Re-entry: The 2020 revival features safety enhancements like CCTV, fire extinguishers, and GPS tracking, focusing on a “hop-on-hop-off” model.
