Shakchunni Coffee Mug

Shankchunni  is a mythical creature or female  ghost,described in South Asian and Southeast Asian folklore about demons. It is particularly popular in Bangladesh and  India. Shankchunni are women who die in a state of virginity after marriage. The word Shankachunni comes from the Sanskrit word Shankhachurni. They are the ghosts of Hindu married women. Even after death, they cannot give up the pleasures and hobbies of married life. They suffer from extreme loneliness in the afterlife. Their passion for family life does not satisfy them well during their lifetime. Therefore, they like to chase married and wealthy housewives so that they can live that life themselves and enjoy the happiness of a married life. Shankachunni is also sometimes seen in the stories of Thakurmar Jhuli. At the end of the story, the sorcerer comes and defeats him. Shankchunni’s skin is green like a leaf. Like most ghosts, their bodies are thin and emaciated. They hold conch shells in their hands, red vermilion on their foreheads, and wear white and red saris in the Bengali tradition. Shankchunni are quite well-dressed as ghosts.
